Irony

I love the word irony and ironic. There are so many things around us everyday that are just downright ironic.
First, there’s John McCain saying that the reasons these big companies are going under now is because of past greed. We need to get rid of the need to be greedy. Yet, he owns 10 houses?
Next, there are people in this country losing their homes everyday. Children are going hungry. There are even some kids in this world wearing clothes with holes because they have too, not because they want too. It’s been on the news the last few days that more money has been raised for this presidential campaign then in any other year in history. It’s in the billions of dollars. We have people losing their homes but billions of dollars are being spent so that two men can slam each other on tv, travel around in fancy planes and buses to slam each other, and lord only knows what else they’re paying for. Oh and I almost forgot, not just to slam each other, but to lie to us. You know they spending billions of dollars trying to say what they think we want to hear so we’ll vote for them.
How about taking some of those billions and spending it on the american people who really need it?
Sometimes politics and irony just go hand and hand.

  1. Trouble is, the politicians know they can get away with it. In the upcoming U.S. election, there are many races that are decided by acclamation since only one person is running. In the past, this has included seats in various state legislatures. Another problem is the fact that the U.S. election is now almost two years long. They are so busy running, they don’t have time to actually get anything done.

I won’t say it is much better in Canada. But at least our election is only 38 days long and each party has a firm limit on how much they can spend ($18 million). While there is still more poverty than should be in a G8 country, at least having 5 political parties makes the candidates a little nervous. And sometimes democracy does work. As the saying goes, democracy is a difficult system, but it is still better than anything else that is out there.

  2. About the irony comments;John McCain’s homes are really owned by his wife and all of those dollars that go to the campaign come from public (ie,private citizens) financing, which means individual contributers give the party the money to run these campaigns.

  3. Let’s not split hairs here. Him or her, either way they still own 10 houses. Who the heck needs 10 houses?? How about they keep 1 and donate 9 to homeless people?

I’m fully aware of where campaign money comes from, I still think it’s ridiculous that so much money is blowed on stupid stuff where there is so much that could be done with that kind of money.

  4. Now here is irony for you!

In a country where you got to be a multi-millionaire to have any chance of running for public office, not to talk about all the rich and powerful people they have to cozy up to to get there, we expect them to understand what it is to live paycheck to paycheck and still come up short every month,
They might have the best of intensions, both of them( and I really believe they do) but the concept is just to foreign for them to fully grasp.
This is the blind side of democracy, what the people want and what they need is two different subjects. Since those in power need to be reelected every four years, a two party system will never work properly. It’s just not enough weight and balances to ensure that the system works.
Some other form of goverment is needed, but what it would take is beyond me.
    Any ideas out there?
    And the ironic part.
Freedom comes with responsibilities, if we don’t act on the responsobilities, we have no freedom

  5. I think what we need to do is balance things a little, let them know what it’s like. Take away their money, give them $600-1,000.00 a month and make them live on that for at least 6 months. Make them get out and have to find a home they can afford, make them pay for their groceries, utilities, etc on that money. Only then can they see what it’s like.

  6. Hey!!! I like that idea. If only they had to “make it” on $1000/month and see how the rest of us had to budget and scrimp to survive, then maybe they would understand why everyone is so upset about the economy and the war and everything else. That would really be ironic. They are so far out of touch with what an average person goes through every week/month they couldn’t even make an “educated” guess how to survive on a limited about of money. It would be fun to watch. Hey - Maybe I should make a suggestion to the networks for a new reality show!!!! Whichever one can actually make it through 3-4 mpnths on a limited income would be the candidate to support. oh, well enough of my fantasy–(gives ya something to think about though)!!!!

  7. Good to see someone agree with me
But here is the largest irony of it all
We,the people actually expect it to work, get all huffed up if someone in public office get cought cheating on their spouse like most of us do, just we’re not in the spotlight so we get away with it.
We actually expect our elected officials to be different from us, and we still expect the system to work
Otherwise we would have done something about it, we have that power in a democracy
If that’s not ironic, I don’t know what is?
